Virginia Man Sentenced to 30 Years for Crypto Funding of ISIS Terror
Mohammed Azharuddin Chhipa, a Virginia resident, has been sentenced to three decades in prison for funneling over $185,000 in cryptocurrency to ISIS operatives. The funds, transmitted between 2019 and 2022, supported prison breaks and terrorist activities in Syria.
Chhipa Leveraged social media platforms and encrypted messaging apps to solicit, launder, and transfer donations. The money was converted to crypto and routed through Turkish intermediaries before reaching ISIS affiliates. The FBI and DOJ’s joint investigation dismantled the operation, marking a significant victory in combating crypto-enabled terrorism financing.
